Studying petroleum engineering in Malaysia
If you want to build a career in energy, there are few better places to study it than Malaysia. The country is one of Asia's oil-and-gas hubs — home to the national energy company PETRONAS and a deep supply chain of operators and service companies — so you learn the subject in a place where the industry is genuinely all around you. That means real internships, industry guest lecturers, and graduate routes that are close at hand rather than an ocean away.
Petroleum engineering is the discipline of finding, extracting and producing oil and gas safely, efficiently and responsibly — and, more and more, of applying those same subsurface skills to the energy transition, from geothermal to carbon capture and storage. You'll start with a solid foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry and geology, then move into reservoir engineering, drilling and well design, production technology, and the economics and safety that surround every energy project. Expect a mix of laboratory work, industry-standard simulation software and, on many programs, an industrial placement.
What makes Malaysia stand out is the combination of well-regarded specialisms, industry-accredited degrees and real affordability. Several Malaysian campuses run strong programs in petroleum, mining and geoscience — some of which feature in international subject rankings — and accredited degrees are recognised by the Board of Engineers Malaysia, whose accreditation carries Washington Accord standing. Branch-campus programs often hold international accreditation too, so your qualification is recognised well beyond Malaysia. Everything is taught in English.

A note on the numbers: fees, rankings and intake dates change over time. We always confirm the current official figures with the university before you apply.
学ぶ内容
Petroleum engineering is about safely and efficiently getting oil and gas out of the ground — and increasingly, about cleaner energy too. You'll build a strong base in maths, physics, chemistry and geology, then specialise in reservoir engineering, drilling, well design, production, and the economics and safety of energy projects. Most programs blend lab and field work with software simulation, and many include an industrial placement so you graduate job-ready.
Around 4 years for a bachelor's (honours); 1–2 years for a master's.
キャリアと成果
- Reservoir, drilling or production engineer
- Petroleum / well engineer with an oil-and-gas operator or service company
- Energy project engineer and field engineer
- Roles across the wider energy transition, including geothermal and carbon storage
- Subsurface, geoscience-adjacent and energy-consulting roles
Malaysia is one of Asia's energy hubs, home to PETRONAS and a deep oil-and-gas supply chain, so graduates often find strong regional demand. Salaries and demand move with the energy market — your YSTC consultation gives you a realistic, current picture for your goals rather than a number that may be out of date.
出願要件
出願要件
- A recognised pre-university qualification (STPM, A-Levels, foundation, matriculation, or equivalent)
- Strong grades in mathematics and physics (and often chemistry)
- Meet the English language requirement for your chosen university
- A foundation or pathway route is available if you don't yet meet direct-entry requirements
英語要件
Most programs ask for IELTS (commonly around 6.0) or an accepted equivalent, with the exact band set by each university. English and foundation pathways are available if you're not there yet. YSTC will confirm what your chosen course needs.

An energy-industry country
Malaysia is an oil-and-gas hub home to PETRONAS, so you study where the industry actually is — with internships, guest lectures and graduate routes close at hand.
Well-regarded specialisms
Several Malaysian campuses run strong, well-established programs in petroleum, mining and geoscience, with some featuring in international subject rankings.
Industry-accredited degrees
Accredited petroleum engineering degrees are recognised by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), a full Washington Accord signatory, with branch-campus programs often carrying additional international accreditation — so your qualification travels.
Taught in English
Programs are taught in English, so international students can study without learning Malay first and keep a globally portable degree.

よくある質問
Where can I study petroleum engineering in Malaysia?
Several Malaysian universities offer petroleum engineering, including specialist campuses with globally ranked oil-and-gas programs. The "Universities offering this" section on this page lists the ones in our database, and YSTC will help you shortlist the best fit for your grades, budget and goals — free.
How much does it cost to study petroleum engineering in Malaysia?
Tuition depends on the university and intake, and fees change over time, so we don't want to quote a figure that could be out of date. Studying in Malaysia is generally far more affordable than in the UK, US or Australia. Your free YSTC consultation includes a clear, current cost estimate for the courses on your shortlist, plus a realistic living-cost budget.
Is a Malaysian petroleum engineering degree recognised internationally?
Yes — leading programs are accredited by the Board of Engineers Malaysia, and branch-campus degrees often carry international engineering accreditation (for example Engineers Australia) and Washington Accord recognition. YSTC will confirm recognition for your specific country and career plans.
What are the entry requirements for petroleum engineering?
You'll typically need a recognised pre-university qualification with strong maths and physics, and to meet the university's English requirement. If you don't yet qualify for direct entry, a foundation or pathway program can get you there. YSTC will check your exact eligibility for free.
What jobs can I get with a petroleum engineering degree?
Graduates work as reservoir, drilling and production engineers with oil-and-gas operators and service companies, and increasingly in the wider energy transition (geothermal, carbon capture and storage). Malaysia's energy industry offers strong regional opportunities. YSTC can connect your questions to real graduate pathways.
Can YSTC help me apply for petroleum engineering in Malaysia?
Yes — and getting started is completely free. We'll help you choose the right university and course, prepare and submit your application and documents, confirm current fees, and manage your Malaysian Student Pass (visa) via EMGS from start to finish.
