Why Indian students are looking at Malaysia
For students in India weighing options abroad, Malaysia offers an appealing middle path: a genuinely international, English-taught education and a globally recognised degree, at a cost far below the UK, US, Australia or Canada. Add a short flight home, a large Indian community, familiar food and a multicultural, welcoming culture, and it's easy to see the draw.
Whether you're finishing Class 12 and planning your first degree, or looking at a master's, this guide explains exactly how to study in Malaysia from India.
A note on numbers: tuition, visa charges and the financial requirement change over time and differ by university, so we don't quote figures that could mislead. We confirm the current, official details for your case — free. The full cost picture is in how much it costs to study in Malaysia.
Your qualifications: studying in Malaysia after 12th
Malaysian universities understand Indian qualifications well. CBSE, ISC/CISCE and state-board Class 12 results are widely accepted, supported by your Class 10. Your entry route depends on your marks and field:
- Direct entry into a bachelor's degree if your results meet the requirement.
- A foundation programme (around a year) bridging into the degree — a normal route, not a setback.
- A diploma route that can also lead into a degree.
Professional fields like medicine, dentistry and pharmacy carry higher, stricter requirements; in-demand fields such as computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, business administration and mechanical engineering offer many entry points. Graduates can also look at an MBA or other master's. We'll map your results to the right path.
English requirements
Whether you need IELTS depends on the university and course. Many Indian students benefit from an English medium of instruction, which some universities accept; others require the test, particularly for competitive or professional programmes. We'll confirm exactly what your shortlist asks for, so you only sit IELTS if you truly need to.
Choosing where to apply
Malaysia has public universities, private universities, and international branch campuses — including Monash, Nottingham and Curtin — where you earn the parent university's degree in Malaysia at a far lower cost. We compare the options in public vs private universities in Malaysia; browse verified profiles and course guides to start.
The student visa (Student Pass)
You'll need a Student Pass, processed through EMGS. Your university lodges it; on approval you receive a Visa Approval Letter to travel. Most delays trace back to avoidable document issues, so accuracy is everything. See the Malaysia student visa, explained — and we manage the whole process for you.
Money matters: fees, funds and payments
Plan for two practical things from India:
- The financial requirement for the visa — evidence you can fund your studies and stay.
- International payments — handling tuition and deposits across borders.
Standard steps, done correctly — which is exactly what we guide you through.
Settling in
Indian students tend to feel at home in Malaysia quickly. There's a large Indian-origin community, Indian and South Asian food is everywhere, festivals like Deepavali are public holidays, English is widely spoken, and Kuala Lumpur is well connected. It's an easy, vibrant place to study.
