The short answer
Yes — you can often study in Malaysia without sitting IELTS — but whether you can depends on the university, the course, and your background. There's no single national rule: each university sets its own English requirement for each programme, and many offer alternatives or a pathway.
So the honest answer to "can I skip IELTS?" is: quite possibly, but you need to check your specific shortlist. This guide explains the usual ways students study in Malaysia without IELTS — and how to find out where you stand.
A note on requirements: English requirements are set by each university and can change, so we don't list fixed rules here that might be wrong for your case. We confirm the exact, current requirement for your chosen universities and courses — free — so you never pay for a test you didn't need, and never get caught short.
When IELTS may not be required
Depending on the university and programme, you might not need IELTS if one or more of these applies:
- Your previous education was in English (medium of instruction). Students from countries or schools where English is the language of instruction can sometimes use this in place of IELTS.
- Your school or board English results meet the requirement. Some universities accept strong English grades from your prior qualifications.
- You hold another recognised English test. Certain alternative English-proficiency tests may be accepted.
Crucially, which of these are accepted varies from one university to the next — and even between courses at the same university. That's why a general rule won't tell you what you need.
The English pathway: a great backup
If you don't currently meet the English requirement and don't have an accepted alternative, there's a reassuring option: an English pathway programme. Many Malaysian universities run these short preparatory courses to bring your English up to the needed level, after which you progress straight into your degree.
It's a normal, common route — thousands of international students take it — and it's far better than letting an English requirement block a course you're otherwise perfect for. If you might need one, we'll tell you early so it's built into your application timeline.
Where IELTS is more likely required
Be realistic about one thing: the more competitive and professional the course, the stricter the English requirement. Programmes like medicine, dentistry and pharmacy are more likely to require IELTS or a high-level equivalent, given how demanding they are. Even here, though, it's set per university — so it's always worth checking rather than assuming the worst.
