The one thing to check first: accreditation
Engineering is a regulated profession, and this is the part students most often overlook. A degree alone doesn't make you a practising engineer — your path to becoming a licensed professional engineer depends on whether your programme is professionally accredited, and on the rules of the country where you intend to work.
Here's why it matters so much:
- Accredited programmes are the ones recognised by professional engineering bodies, and they're usually what employers and licensing authorities look for.
- Recognition varies by country. A qualification that's perfectly recognised in one place may need extra steps before you can be licensed in another. If you already know where you want to practise, check that route before you enrol.
- It affects your whole career, not just graduation. Choosing an accredited programme from the start saves you from costly conversion exams or top-up study later.
