Choose the course first, then the city
A quick but important point before we tour the map: start with your course and university, then consider the city — not the other way around. The best city for you is usually wherever the right programme is. With that said, the city shapes your daily life, budget and experience, so it's well worth understanding your options.
Malaysia's student life clusters around a few key areas. Here's the lay of the land.
A note on costs: living costs differ between cities and change over time, so we don't quote figures here. We build a realistic budget for your chosen city as part of a free consultation — see cost of living for students in Kuala Lumpur for how it works.
Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley
This is the heart of student Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding Klang Valley — Selangor towns like Subang Jaya, Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya, Cyberjaya, Shah Alam and Gombak — hold the largest concentration of universities and international students in the country.
Universities here include Asia Pacific University (APU), Taylor's University, Sunway University, Monash University Malaysia, University of Nottingham Malaysia, HELP University, UCSI University, Multimedia University (MMU), IIUM, Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
Why students love it:
- The widest choice of universities and courses.
- The busiest student scene, nightlife, shopping and events.
- The best public transport (LRT, MRT, monorail) — easy to get around.
- The most internships, part-time options and networking.
Trade-off: the cost of living is a little higher than in smaller cities — though still very affordable by global standards.
Penang
A favourite for its blend of culture, food and a more relaxed pace, Penang (George Town and around) is home to Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), one of Malaysia's leading public universities.
Why students love it: world-famous food, heritage charm, beaches, and a calmer, often more affordable life than KL — while still being a real city.
Johor (the south)
Bordering Singapore, Johor is a growing education hub. It hosts Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Johor Bahru, University of Reading Malaysia in Iskandar Puteri, and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) in Batu Pahat.
Why students love it: proximity to Singapore, a developing modern infrastructure, and generally lower costs than the capital.
Sarawak and Sabah (East Malaysia)
Across the sea on Borneo, East Malaysia offers a greener, more laid-back student experience. Sarawak hosts Curtin University Malaysia in Miri, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak in Kuching, and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS); Sabah is home to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in Kota Kinabalu.
Why students love it: stunning nature, a relaxed pace, a strong sense of community, and — at the branch campuses — international degrees away from the big-city bustle.
Other notable university towns
Malaysia's strong public universities spread students across the country, including Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Serdang, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) in Kampar, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) in Sintok, and Quest International University (QIU) in Ipoh, among many others. How to choose your city
Ask yourself:
- Where is my course taught well? Always the first question.
- Big city or smaller city? Buzz and choice, or calm and value?
- Budget? City affects your cost of living — see our cost guide.
- Lifestyle? City life, beaches, nature, food, pace.
- Connections? Closeness to home, an airport, or a community you know.
