About this university
About Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia is one of Malaysia's five public research universities and the country's leading name in engineering, science and technology — which the university itself describes as its "premier" focus. It's based in Skudai on the outskirts of Johor Bahru, Malaysia's southern gateway. Its roots reach back to Treacher Technical School in 1904; it became the National Institute of Technology (Institut Teknologi Kebangsaan) in 1972 and was officially named Universiti Teknologi Malaysia on 1 April 1975. Today its sprawling 1,222-hectare main campus is complemented by a 38-hectare campus in central Kuala Lumpur and a 50-hectare Pagoh campus in the Muar district, giving you a genuine national institution with a strong technology focus.
UTM is one of Malaysia's highest-ranked universities. It sits at 153rd in the world and 25th in Asia in the QS World University Rankings 2026, and lands in the 401-500 band of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026 — and its broad Engineering & Technology subject area ranks 86th in the world in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. This is a research-intensive university with a large postgraduate community — around a quarter of its roughly 32,000 students are at Master's or PhD level — supported by 10+ research alliances and 28 centres of excellence. Its engineering programs are accredited through the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), and because Malaysia is a Washington Accord signatory through BEM, UTM engineering degrees are recognised internationally for entry-to-practice engineering — alongside recognition from bodies such as the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK) and the Institution of Chemical Engineers.
For international students — around 4,852 of them at the end of 2025, from 60+ countries — UTM offers strong engineering and technology education with outcomes to match. UTM recorded a 100% graduate employability rate for its 2023 cohort in the Ministry of Higher Education's Graduate Tracer Study, the highest among Malaysian public universities that year. (This MOHE measure counts graduates who are employed, in further study, upskilling or awaiting placement within six months.) Graduates are reported to go on to employers like Intel, Samsung, Petronas and Microsoft. Mandatory internships of at least 10 weeks and industry advisory panels keep your learning tied to the real world, and the alumni network now spans 102 countries. UTM is a public university, so official fees vary by program — and whatever you'd like to study, YS Training & Consultancy can help you choose the right course, confirm the current official fees, and apply with confidence.
